Balancing screen time and study time

Balancing screen time and study time

I’m a teacher and a parent so I get it…

A lot of parents are terrified by the minefield that is: screen time and kids.

Two things are true here:

  1. Screens are everywhere in our modern lives
  2. Kids are fascinated by technology

Here’s how I see it:

1. Capitalise on brain power…and get homework done first

Research suggests that kids’ brains are more receptive to learning and retention either straight after school (while they’re still in school mode) or after a short break with some exercise and a snack but before dinner. Your child should get in the habit of doing homework at the same time every day. The later it gets, the more tired the child becomes and the more slowly the homework gets done.

2. I like to move it move it 🤸

Offer up activities that ensure your kids stay screen-free for a portion of each day. This creates balance, helping kids avoid jumping from homework to screen time with nothing in between. After-school clubs, getting outdoors together as a family, even if it’s just for a quick walk around the block, or doing some exercise together. Involving yourself in your child’s screen-free moments is an excellent way to bond and role model healthy digital habits.

3. Set that boundary

Clear and consistent boundaries when it comes to screen time is beneficial for the whole family. EDURINO's adorable timer feature (controlled via the Parent Zone on the app), lets kids know that play time is almost over when our Rhino begins to yawn. When screen time has finished, he falls asleep. Parents and kids alike love this feature and its gentle transition to the end of screen time.

4. There’s a reason game-based learning is taking off 🚀

Teachers and school leaders are loving game-based learning and its impact on student outcomes. Learning through games is essentially learning through play...it is seriously fun! It is also proven to supercharge engagement and motivation to learn like no other tool can.

There is a world in which your kids’ screen time can be hugely beneficial for their development and can accelerate their academic progress…it all starts with EDURINO.
